Toyota Motor has joined forces with Chinese self driving technology startup Momenta to offer high definition (HD) automated mapping systems and updates for vehicles.

Momenta specialises in developing automated, HD mapping systems using camera based technology.

At the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas in January 2020, the Beijing company showcased its latest front mounted camera system using Texas Instruments’ Jacinto TDA4x System on Chip which can help automakers meet the forthcoming safety requirements for new cars including Euro NCAP 2022/2024.

Momenta said its technology can automatically generate HD maps with 10cm level relative accuracy.

The maps can help autonomous vehicles identify physical objects like traffic signs and lane borders and make driving decisions while the vehicle is in motion. The company added the system is available for large scale, cost effective commercial application. Toyota and Momenta initially plan to commercialise the automated mapping platform in China.

Earlier this week, Toyota Research Institute (TRI) announced the formation of a partnership with the Dynamic Map Platform Company (DMP) with the aim of developing a proof of concept (PoC) for an automated mapping platform (AMP) using the technology of both companies.

Tokyo based DMP develops and supplies HD maps with centimetre accuracy which is essential in estimating the accurate position of a vehicle on the road and to achieving safe and comfortable autonomous driving.

Last year, DMP acquired US startup Ushr to develop and supply HD maps in North America as well as Japan.

The project will start in April 2020 with TRI’s automated driving division contributing its open software platform with image recognition technology, while DMP will supply its HD mapping technology.

They aim to develop a system that can detect and process changes in lane level road features based on images and other data collected from vehicle sensors.
