Suzuki and Honda announced they would temporarily suspend production in Indonesia for two weeks in April due to the COVID19 coronavirus outbreak.

Suzuki Motor's local manufacturing subsidiary, PT Suzuki Indomobil Motor, said it would halt operations at its Cakung, Tambun and Cikarang assembly plants for two weeks between 13 and 24 April to help prevent the spread of the COVID19 coronavirus.

Its workers would be put on paid leave during this period.

The company also confirmed its sales and aftermarket network would remain operational throughout the country.

Honda local manufacturing subsidiary PT Honda Prospect Motor also said it would halt production at its two vehicle assembly plants in Karawang for two weeks from 13 April.

Suzuki and Honda are the first major Indonesian automakers to announce coronavirus related shutdowns but are not expected to be the last.

While the vehicle wholesale market was reasonably buoyant in February, with volume declining by just 2.6% year on year, March data is expected to show a much sharper decline.

The government only began ordering the shutdown of businesses open to the public and encouraging people to work from home in the third week of March so there is clearly worse to come in terms of economic data.

A Toyota spokesman told local reporters "we have yet to stop production but we are prepared for a shutdown if necessary".

The company said it had already reduced the level of activity across its operations in Indonesia.
