The Thai government has set a deadline of 30 September for the last delivery of cars bought under the previous government’s first-time buyer scheme. The scheme was originally launched in 2011 mainly to help establish a domestic market for the expanding range of eco-cars entering production in the country.
Under the scheme, first-time buyers of vehicles costing up to THB1m (US$27,800) are entitled to a tax refund equivalent to 10% of the value of the car after five years of ownership. While the deadline for applications for the scheme closed at the end of 2012, there are still a number of potential buyers that have applied for the scheme but have not yet actually bought their cars.
