Hyundai Motor’s union workers in South Korea have failed to reach an annual pay deal with the company and voted to authorise strike action. Strike action could follow next week.

Reuters reported that the company’s Korean workers could go on strike as early as Monday, September 14. However, negotiations between the union and management are poised to resume.

Reports says the vote also took place amid a proposed restructuring of the company’s pay system.

“We look forward to continuing our discussions to reach an agreement as soon as possible,” a Hyundai Motor spokesman said in a statement.

Observers note that industrial action over the annual wage negotiations is nothing new at Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai Motor’s labour union is seeking a 7.84% rise in monthly basic wages, Reuters reported, as well as bonuses on top.
