Thailand’s new vehicle market continued to struggle in August with sales falling by 9.9% year on year to 61,991 units compared with 68,835 units in the same month of 2014, according to data released by industry sources.

Cumulative eight month sales fell 16.5% to 491,963 units, from an already depressed 589,013 units a year ago. Thai consumers continued to struggle with high debt while the economy also remains under pressure from weak exports and depressed commodity prices.

Vehicle production rose 13.3% to 159,470 units in August, driven by a 13.8% rise in exports to 101,982 units, according to the Federation of Thai Industries.

The federation also reported a 12.3% drop in domestic motorcycle sales to 125,620 units in August.
