Hyundai Motor India, the country’s second biggest car maker, said on Monday its August sales jumped 46.8% from a year ago to 14,436 cars helped by strong demand for its Santro [Atos] compact car and the Accent sedan, Reuters reported.

The wholly owned subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor said in a statement it sold 11,843 units of the Santro compared with 8,193 units a year earlier and sales of the Accent surged 61% to 2,400 units, the report said.

It also sold 150 units of the Sonata luxury sedan and 43 units of its premium sports utility vehicle, the Terracan. Hyundai, which plans to turn India into an export hub for small cars, imports the Terracan in its fully built form from South Korea, Reuters added.

Hyundai, which has been in India since October 1998, makes the Santro hatchback, the Accent and Sonata sedans at its $US700 million car plant on the outskirts of Madras, Reuters said.

Its main competitors in the Indian market include top-ranked Maruti Udyog Ltd, a unit of Japan’s Suzuki Motor, local firm Tata Motors and Fiat’s Indian subsidiary, Reuters added.
