June 2020 new vehicle registrations in New Zealand were down 17.5% year on year to 11,514 units.

Year to date volume was down 29.1% to 53,699 in a year heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first quarter saw sales of 32,833 new vehicles while the second saw 20,866.

The Motor Industry Association said June reflected a "steady but weaker market compared to 2019".

"Sales of both passenger and commercial vehicles were down, confirmation the market is tightening its belt in a recession," chief executive David Crawford said.

Pure electric vehicles continued their modest rate of monthly registrations with 131 units in June while 54 PHEVs and 590 hybrids were sold.
