Tesla has opened a new factory dedicated to supplying European customers with its Model S EV. The factory, located in Tilburg, in the Netherlands, streamlines the production process for European deliveries, the automaker said.
The Tilburg factory assembles the Model S from parts made in Tesla’s US factory in Fremont, California – the former NUMMI joint venture plant. Dutch assembly includes installation of the battery pack, powertrain and rear axle and the cars first firmware upload, followed by full testing.
The factory is the first car factory in Europe with its own indoor production test track. The 750m route consists of 400m of asphalt and 6000 dots simulating bumps in the road. The track puts each car through its final paces to ensure quality standards have been met.
The 77,648 sq factory is designed for maximum efficiency and is BREEAM-NL Outstanding certified. The energy efficient production lines take about 90 cars from body shell to finished saloon each day, (450 a week), doubling capacity.
Tesla now has 69 retail outlets and service centres across 12 countries in Europe. It has also installled over 1,000 Superchargers.
