GM officials on Wednesday announced the investment of approximately $US30 million in the Flint Metal Centre. “The state-of-the-art high-speed progressive presses give us significantly more flexibility to produce parts and improve productivity,” said Wiemels. Efforts are already underway to purchase the presses and installation of the equipment is being determined, he added.

“Installation of the high-speed progressive presses is central to GM’s plan to commonise its manufacturing operations,” said Wiemels.
The Flint Metal Centre, which sits on 92 acres and consists of 2 million square feet, employs approximately 2,540 people. The plant stamps and assembles major and secondary sheet metal panels for GM trucks and midsize vans and produces engine cradles for passenger cars and midsize vans.

The Flint Metal Centre began as the Chevrolet Flint Frame and Stamping Plant, which was built in 1954 to manufacture wings, bonnets, and full-size chassis. In 1965, the plant was renamed Flint Metal Fabricating. It was realigned with GM Truck & Bus Group in 1984 and became part of Metal Fabricating Division in 1994.

GM Metal Fabricating Division, headquartered in Troy, Michigan, provides many of the dies as well as major and minor sheet metal parts for the majority of GM vehicles produced in North America. The division has 28,000 employees at its 18 operating facilities in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Canada.
