Toyota Motor and its subsidiaries reported a 21.6% drop in global sales to 4,164,487 vehicles in the first half of 2020, according to data released by the Japanese automaker.
The data, which included the Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino brands, mades Toyota the world's best selling auto group ahead of Volkswagen which reported a 27.4% decline to 3.89m units in the same period. All automakers have seen their sales plunge this year as markets around the world locked down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 3,771,354 Toyota and Lexus branded vehicles were sold in the first half of 2020, down by 21.2% year-on-year, while Daihatsu sales fell by 24.8% to 326,163 units and Hino sales were down 26.2% at 66,970 units. Group sales outside Japan fell by 23.1% to 3,151,582 units.
Nissan Motor has also reported its global sales for the first half of the year which declined by 31.2% to 1,807,466 units. Sales outside Japan fell by 32.2% to 1,570,490 units, including a 17% fall in China to 596,342 units; North America -39.1% to 560,689 units; and Europe 179,184 units (-41.6%).
Mitsubishi reported a 34.9% drop in first half global production to 440,372 units with domestic sales down by 35.2% at 37,767 units.
