Hyundai Motor claimed to have set a world record with its Kona Electric compact SUV for distance travelled on a single charge.
Three Kona Electric models were tested at the Lausitzring EuroSpeedway racetrack in Brandenburg, northern Germany, on 22-24 July under the supervision of Dekra, an independent vehicle inspection company which operates at the racetrack. The aim of the exercise was to achieve a minimum distance of 1,000km (600 miles) per car on a single charge.

The three vehicles covered distances of 1,026 km, 1,024 km and 1,019 km on a single 64kW battery charge, with power consumptions of 6.28kWh, 6.25kWh and 6.24kWh per 100km respectively which the company said was well below the standard rate of 14.7 kWh per 100km determined by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).
Hyundai made 36 driver changes for the tests, which refrained from using air conditioning, infotainment and other electrical equipment to conserve energy.
The normal driving range for the Kona Electric in city driving conditions is 400km.
