October registrations of new vehicles in New Zealand continued the downward trend for 2020, the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said.

Registrations were 20.6% lower year on year at 11,876 vehicles. 

Year to date sales were down 23.5% to 99,162 which, MIA said, was "consistent with recent months' data confirming our expectations that 2020 will finish about 25% down on 2019 volume".

October saw sales of 107 pure electric vehicles, 60 PHEVs and 787 hybrids.

Registrations of 8,296 passenger vehicles and SUVs for October 2020 were down 22% on 2019 volume while commercial vehicle registrations of 3,580 were down 17.4% year on year.

The top three models were the updated Toyota Hilux (731 units), followed by the Ford Ranger (686) and the Kia Sportage (488).

Toyota remained overall market leader with a 17% market share followed by Ford (11%) and Kia (9%). 

Kia was market leader for passenger and SUV registrations with 15% share followed by Toyota (13%) and Mazda (8%). 

The top selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Sportage, Kia Seltos and Toyota Corolla.

Toyota regained commercial vehicle lead with a 27% share followed by Ford (24%) and Mitsubishi (10%).

The Hilux was best selling CV (20%) followed by the Ranger (19%) and Mitsubishi Triton (8%). 

SUV medium vehicles took the largest segment share at 23% share followed by SUV Compact (18%) and Pick Up/Chassis 4×4 (13%).
