Microsoft Corporation’s board of directors has nominated BMW Chairman and Chief Executive Helmut Panke to join in a move designed to increase its number from eight to ten, Reuters reports.

The Reuters report says that the increase is part of the software giant’s push to strengthen its corporate governance controls.
Fifty-seven year old Panke would be Microsoft’s first director from outside the United States.
The new members would stand for election by shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in November. The board for re-election at the November meeting nominated all eight currently serving members.
Dr Panke has been at BMW since 1982 and has served as chairman of the board of management since May 2002.
