AP reports that General Motors will continue to build trucks at its Linden plant until at least 2007. GM had previously said it would keep the Linden plant open until at least the third quarter of 2005. But the extension announced Thursday means 1,200 workers will keep their jobs and continue to produce Chevrolet Blazers and GMC Jimmys.

The AP report says that the deal was part of a national labour contract agreement that GM reached with the United Auto Workers.
AP said that Dan Flores, a GM spokesman, would not comment on the plant’s future, saying the company did not discuss tentative labour agreements.
“A lot of people had us written off,” Guy Messina, president of UAW Local 595, told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday’s editions. “It means a lot to our workers with kids in school and tuitions to pay and mortgages to pay. “It means no one has to think about transferring out of state.”
