Earlier this week, a COVID related shortage of seat foam forced Volkswagen to reduce output at Wolfsburg in Germany and also affected component supply sections at Brunswick. Now, VW said on Friday, it faces a shortage in the supply of semiconductors and would adjust production at factories in China, North America and Europe.

Semiconductor manufacturers earlier in the coronavirus crisis shifted their output away from the hard hit auto sector to serve other areas, like consumer electronics, Volkswagen told Reuters.

But a recovery in the auto industry now meant VW was facing a bottleneck in supply.

Models affected include Volkswagen brand cars and commercial vehicles, as well as Skoda, Seat and Audi, the news agency.

"We are now feeling the effects of the global semiconductor bottleneck," Murat Aksel, a designated board member overseeing purchasing, told Reuters.
