February 2019 new vehicle sales in New Zealand were up 1.5% year on year to 11,699 units registered, the second strongest February on record, according to the Motor Industry Association (MIA).
Registrations of passenger vehicles and SUVs last month were up 2.2% to 7,580 units while commercial vehicle sales were flat, up by just 3 units or 0.1% to 4,119.
In February, Toyota remained overall market leader with a 14% share (1,617 units), followed by Ford (11%; 1,234) and Mitsubishi (9%; 1,053).
Toyota also led passenger and SUV registrations with 11% (800 units) followed by Mazda (10%; 758), Suzuki (8%; 581).
The top selling models last month were the Mazda CX-5 (292), Kia Sportage (273) and Suzuki Swift (246).
In the commercial sector, Ford retained its market lead with 20% (818 units) followed by Toyota (20%; and just one unit behind at 817) and Mitsubishi (12%; 506). Ford's Ranger remained best selling commercial model with a 17% share (699) followed by the Toyota Hilux (17%; 686) with the Mitsubishi Triton third (12%; 505).

By GlobalDataVehicle segmentation for February 2019 continued recent trends with SUV's and light commercials dominating. The top two segments were SUV medium vehicles with 17% share followed by Pick Up/Chassis Cab 4×4 (16%) and SUV Compact (15%.
"The outturn for February 2019 was pleasing, being the second strongest February on record behind 2017. It indicates the market, while not growing, is steady as she goes" said MIA CEO David Crawford.
