New vehicle sales in Taiwan increased by just under 1% to 38,239 units in June from 37,889 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports, citing registration data compiled by the directorate of highways.

The overall market was down by 6.9% at 206,922 units in the first half of the year, however, from 22,194 units in the same period of last year, reflecting a weak first quarter.

Sales of imported vehicles increased 2.9% to 17,167 units in June but were down by 0.9% at 95,808 units year to date. Sales of locally assembled vehicles reached 111,114 units in the six month period. 

Toyota sales were up by 4.6% at 55,825 units in the first half of the year, helped by the recent launch of the country's best-selling model – the Corolla Altis [sedan] – and also the RAV4. Yulon Nissan saw its sales fall by 6% to 16,713 units; Honda Taiwan's tally was 16,087 units (-21.6%); Mercedes-Benz 14,584 units (-5.0%); and China Motor Corporation/Mitsubishi 12,299 units (+4.8%).
