Japan’s Toray Industries announced plans to build a new facility in Hungary for the production of separator film for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

The new plant will be built next to its existing Toray Industries Hungary Kft subsidiary in the town Nyergesujfalu, just north of the capital city Budapest, and will increase Toray’s global battery separator film (BSF) production capacity by approximately 20% when it goes into operation in July 2021.

The Toray group has BSF production facilities at its main Nasu plant in Japan and in South Korea where it has two subsidiaries making BFS and coatings – both of which have been expanded recently.

Toray expects global demand for BSF to expand rapidly in the coming years as consumer demand for electric vehicles, mobile electronics and energy storage systems rises. It expects demand for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe in particular, where environmental awareness is increasing, to expand rapidly.
