New vehicle sales in Taiwan jumped by 12.5% to 48,429 units in July from 43,056 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.

Last month's strong market performance, driven largely by the recent launch of key new models, reduced this year's cumulative volume decline to 3.9% with 255,351 vehicle sales year to date compared with 265,250 units in the same period of last year.

Sales of imported vehicles increased by over 13% to 21,630 units in July and by 1.6% at 117,438 units year to date, while sales of domestically-assembled vehicles were down by 7.8% at 137,913 units in the seven month period.

Toyota sales increased by 9.0% to 82,918 units in the first seven months of the year, helped by the recent launch of the new Corolla Altis, the country's best selling model, and also the RAV4.

Second-placed Yulon Nissan saw its year to date sales fall by 5.2% to 20,379 units; Honda Taiwan 20,117 units (-17.9%); and Zhonghua-Mitsubishi 15,106 units.
