The total heavy duty truck market (over 15 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight) in the region currently stands at approximately 235,000 vehicles this year.

Volvo Trucks says that demand is increasing in all the markets in this region – especially in China, South Korea and Japan – plus South-East Asia, where the company has two truck assembly plants in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

“We expect the Asian market as a whole to double in size over the next ten years and much of that growth will take place right here,” says Claes Svedberg. “Our goal is to secure an average five percent market share in the Asian markets within a ten-year period. That means that we at this point of time will be delivering some 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles per year.”

Volvo Truck identifies two main factors behind the increase in the demand for heavy trucks in Asia: expansion of the infrastructure and increasing involvement in environmental issues.

“The many motorway projects open the path to the creation of an efficient transport system -something that today is a precondition for ensuring good economic growth. In parallel, we offer a comprehensive product range, one that has been developed as an integral part of a modern, efficient transport system,” explains Claes Svedberg

“The Volvo name represents respect for the environment, and we are today a world-leading manufacturer of economical and clean engines. Together with our customers, we can help alleviate problems caused by road congestion and exhaust emissions,” continues Claes Svedberg.

During the spring, Volvo Trucks launched the new generation Volvo FH and Volvo FM vehicles in a number of Asian countries and several markets will follow this summer and autumn.
