Ford Sales and Service (Thailand) Co., Ltd., announced that it has sold 8,968 vehicles in the first seven months of 2000, a 161 percent increase compared to the 3,435 vehicles the company sold during the first seven months of 1999. Among volume car makers, Ford leads the Thailand auto industry in year-on-year sales growth.

“Continued expansion of the sales and service network, plus our entry into the passenger vehicle segment, has helped Ford maintain its lead,” said Mr. Mike Pease, executive director of Ford Sales and Service Thailand. “Our focus on maintaining the best value for money is another advantage our competitors have trouble matching,” Pease added.

Thailand industry sales in July 2000 reached 20,250 units, down about 15.3 percent from the 23,361 units sold in June 2000. Most auto makers experienced a decrease in sales in July compared to June. The drop is sales can be attributed to the normal seasonal decline as the rainy season affects buying habits in July, according to Mr. Pease.

For the year, total vehicle sales in Thailand through July have reached 142,505 units, a 40.5 increase compared to the 102,007 vehicles sold in Thailand during the first seven months of 1999.

Industry sales in Thailand are expected to reach between 260,000 and 280,000 units for the year, according to Ford projections.
Total Ford sales in July 2000 reached 1,426 units, up 110 percent compared to the 676 units Ford sold in July 1999. In the pickup truck segment, Ford sold 1,331 units of the Ford Ranger, giving Ford 12.1 percent share of the market segment, and making Ford the fourth-best selling pickup truck brand. In the passenger car segment, Ford sold 93 units of the recently launched Ford Laser sedan, giving Ford 1.4 percent of the passenger car segment.

“Overall, we are pleased with our performance for year,” said Mr. Pease. “Ford is performing better than the overall market Š and with the launch of our new 2.9-liter Ranger pickup, we expect to attract more customers to the Ford brand.”
