The Argentine economic crisis is still affecting the local car market, according to the Argentinean National Automaker’s Federation (Adefa), writes Rogério Louro.

In June, automakers produced 13,887 vehicles, a drop of 8.9% compared with the 15,247 units made in May.

Compared with the 25,714 vehicles made in June 2001, production fell by 46%.

Local sales went the same way as production. Last month only 4,258 vehicles were sold in Argentina, 29.5% down on the 6,037 units sold in May.

June sales were down 72.2% on the 15,309 vehicles sold in 2001.

Exports also decreased last month. In June, Argentine car makers shipped 9,527 units, a fall of 20.4% compared to the 11,973 vehicles shipped abroad in May. Compared with the 19,986 vehicles exported in June 2001, last month’s exports dropped 52.3%.

First half 2002 results were also down on the same period last year. In H1 2002 local car makers produced 68,996 vehicles, down 48.3% on the 133,574 vehicles made in the first half of 2001.

Year-on-year H1 comparison also shows a fall of 52.3% from 96,432 vehicles in H1 2001 to 45,966 units in 2002.

Exports decreased 40.8% to 54,682 vehicles compared with 92,387 vehicles in H1 2001.
