According to the Taiwan Economic News sales of new domestically made and imported automobiles in Taiwan reached 32,358 units in June, a gain of 14.7% on the same month last year. The report said that the sales statistics on new cars were based on number of new car licenses issued by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

The newspaper report said that among the top five local automakers, China Motor Corp. (making Mitsubishi models) led in sales volume for June with 8,059 cars, growing by 50.4% from a year earlier. Kuozui Motors, Ltd. (Toyota car models) came in second with 7,597 cars (up 3.6%), followed by Yulon Motor Co., Ltd. (Nissan models) with 4,263 (down 4.8%), Ford Lio Ho Motor Co., Ltd. (Ford models) with 3,708 (up 36.6%), Mazda Corp. (Taiwan) (Mazda models) with 1,544 (up 51.8%), and Sanyang Industry Co., Ltd. (Honda models) with 1,120 (-28.0). The six local carmakers had a combined market share of 81.25% last month.
The report added that there were 4,449 new imported cars sold last month. Among import brands, Mercedes Benz led in sales volume for June with 832 cars. BMW came in second with 479.
The cumulative sales volume for the first half of this year posted at 186,460 units, edging down 0.39% from the 187,194 units sold during January-June 2001.
Kuozui ranked first in terms of six-month sales volume with 44,235 cars, up 6.2% on the same period of last year. China Motor was second with 42,622 cars (up 4.9%), followed by Yulon with 28,039 (down 10.3%), Ford Lio Ho with 23,410 (up 16.3%), Mazda with 8,713 (up 28.1%), and Sanyang with 5,876 (down 54.3%).
