Delphi’s Harrison Thermal division will supply its Compact Variable Compressor (CVC) to support the assembly of the Stilo and Palio passenger cars, as well as the Doblo van and Siena bi-fuel vehicle. The CVCs will be supplied to those vehicles featuring Fiat’s 1.8-litre engine.

The contract marks Delphi’s first thermal management business with Fiat in South America.

Delphi’s facility in Jaguariuna, Brazil, will supply six-cylinder CVCs beginning in the third quarter this year, supporting the assembly of the Stilo and Palio at Fiat’s plant in Betim, Brazil. Supply to the Doblo and Siena will begin in 2003, with those vehicles also assembled in Betim.

Delphi says the total business has a forecasted value of USD $20 million over its lifetime, which extends to 2007 on one program.

Delphi says the CVC represents the next generation of variable displacement piston compressor technology. Featuring a “swash” plate configuration, the CVC produces less noise and vibration than contemporary designs, while delivering high-speed operation and best-in-class performance ratings in relation to mass and volume. Its highly efficient mode of operation allows automakers to realize savings in energy consumption, and is a key part of Delphi’s initiatives targeting energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The 10,000 m2 CVC facility in Jaguariuna began compressor manufacturing in August 2000, and represents the company’s first compressor facility in South America. It is also one of four Delphi plants (wholly owned or majority joint venture) committed to producing the new compressor design, with plants in France, Hungary and the US also part of the company’s CVC compressor manufacturing footprint.
