Hyundai Motor Group announced it has developed the claimed world's first machine learning based Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML) system for vehicles, which learns the owner's personal driving styles and incorporates them into the system's own self-driving behaviour – creating a customised experience for the driver.

The South Korean automaker plans to incorporate this new technology into forthcoming models.

The company has integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) system, allowing it to adapt its self driving patterns to the owner's prevailing driving behaviour – including preferred distance from the vehicle in front while traveling at different speeds selected by the driver.

Hyundai Motor Group vice president Woongjun Jang said in a statement: "The new SCC-ML improves the intelligence of our existing ADAS system to dramatically improve the practicality of semi autonomous features," adding "The company's aim is to continue to develop innovative AI technologies in order to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving."

SCC-ML combines AI and SCC into a system that learns the driver's patterns and habits, allowing it to autonomously drive the vehicle in an identical pattern to that of the driver.

Hyundai's SCC-ML uses front cameras and radars which constantly acquire information on driving and road conditions from which the centralised computer extracts relevant details to identify key driving patterns, including acceleration, driver responsiveness, driving conditions and speeds.

The driving pattern information is regularly updated through the sensors, to learn the driver's latest driving style. In addition, SCC-ML is programmed specifically to avoid learning unsafe driving patterns, increasing its reliability and safety.
