Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has begun testing the new Jeep Compass production line at its Melfi plant in Italy.

The model, launched in 2016, was produced initially for Europe in Mexico but rising sales have made a business case to bring production to Italy, including a plug-in hybrid version.

This is part of a EUR5bn investment plan FCA previously announced for Italy.

The plant already makes the Renegade (900,000 units since 2015).

Manufacturing of the Compass will begin in the first quarter of next year, producing vehicles for sale in Europe, followed by PHEV variants of both Compass and Renegade.

“This will enable the group to respond faster to customer needs and market dynamics,” FCA said.

Compass production is part of a wider investment plan, which includes the introduction of 13 all-new or restyled models, and the launch of an electrification plan, with the introduction of 12 electric versions of new or existing models in the range.

Mirafiori in Turin will house production of the Fiat 500 BEV and hybrid and battery electric Maserati models (also to be produced in Modena). Further plans include production of the Ducato Electric and the new Alfa Romeo Tonale, both at Italian plants.

The Compass is also produced in Mexico, Brazil, China and India.

The latest version, launched in 2017, sold 78,000 units in EMEA in 2018, accounting for over 40% of annual Jeep volume.
