Musk made the Berlin announcement at an event in Germany. He has previously said that Germany was a frontrunner for its first European manufacturing facility in Europe, with production slated to start in 2021. Reports suggest the so-called ‘Gigafactory 4’ factory will make cars and batteries.

Musk said on Twitter that Tesla ‘will build batteries, powertrains and vehicles, starting with Model Y’ at the factory.

“Tesla is coming to Brandenburg with a big investment,” Dietmar Woidke, state premier of Brandenburg, said in a statement. “We lobbied for this for a long time in intensive talks and with good arguments.”

According to Bild newspaper, Musk has also said the factory would be built near the construction site of the unfinished Berlin airport.
