US president-elect Donald Trump has targeted General Motors for criticism over tariff-free imports to the US of cars made in low-cost Mexico.

It's a return to a theme that he has used in his campaign to argue that US companies should invest more in the US and not outsource to low-cost Mexico. He has also criticised the NAFTA free trade arrangements and said that NAFTA needs to be changed.

Trump's latest criticism of General Motors comes from a tweet – he is an enthusiastic user of the social media tool to fire missives.

The tweet reads: "General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border tax!"

Mr Trump has also previously levelled criticisms at Ford for its North American sourcing strategy, though Ford CEO Mark Fields has responded robustly to point out that Ford's strategy also includes plenty of investment in US plants.

Fields recently told just-auto that Ford's commitment to invest in the US is stronger than it has ever been. "We have created 28,000 jobs [in the US] in the past five years and we are very proud of the fact that we are the number one employer of hourly workers in the US and produce more vehicles in the US than anyone else," he said.
