Sales of imported cars in Romania doubled in the first half of this year, due to a boost by lower customs duties on imports from the European Union (EU).
Romania’s customs duties on EU cars dropped to 12 percent from 30 percent on January 1 2000. The duties are scheduled to be cut by another 6 percent as of January 1, 2001, and will be completely abolished beginning in 2002.

Romania’s increase in car imports can also be attributed to the expanded leasing system, lower car prices, and the cancellation of the 5 percent road tax charged on new vehicles.
Romanians have a preference for European-made cars, and they purchase cars that cost 8,000 to 12,000 U.S. dollars, according to experts.
