Schaeffler says 90% of its production lines are operating again following this morning’s (15 May) explosion at its bearings factory in Eltmann, Bavaria, which saw four staff seriously injured according to Police.
A total of 23 people were hurt following the incident at Schaeffler’s filtration device for salt in the plant, although those less affected have now been discharged from hospital.

“We are currently investigating the root cause of the accident and are analysing the situation,” a Schaeffler statement sent to just-auto noted.
“At no time there was any danger to the population as no hazardous or toxic substances were released.
“There has not been a strong smoke development in the aftermath of the accident. We do not expect any implications for our customers since 90% of our production lines are operating again.”
At the Eltmann plant, the Schaeffler Group manufactures rolling elements for bearings and employs around 480 employees.

By GlobalDataBavarian Police confirmed workers had now returned to the factory, although it appears the area around the site has been cordoned off.
“There is not a danger – [the] fire is out,” a Bavarian Police spokesman told just-auto. “We have closed the nearest area around the explosion. [There are] No people living in the area.
“The factory is open and working.”
