Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover announced it had done a deal with Plugsurfing to supply a "premium charging service for its electric vehicles in selected markets in Europe".

Drivers of such models as the new I-Pace EV SUV or PHEV Range Rovers will be given free access to a public charging app for their brand. Both locate 70,000 charging points and take payment for the charging session. Customers will also receive a universal charging card that allows them to use most charging points across Europe.

Through the apps, JLR EV drivers can see whether a charging station is available or occupied and can choose to rapid charge before reaching their destination or charge at normal speed upon arrival.

Mick Cameron, JLR's head of e-mobility, said: "We are aiming to simplify the charging process through simple accessibility, usability and payment in one solution. With the number of accessible charging points rapidly growing as new operators work with the Plugsurfing network in major markets throughout Europe, it helps our customers to be working with the leading provider."

Plugsurfing CEO Jacob van Zonneveld added: "Everyone switching to an electric vehicle asks, 'where do I charge my car?' Thanks to this partnership with JLR, we are able to remove one of the largest barriers to switching to an electric vehicle. We know that another barrier to switching is the availability of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Plugsurfing is working to influence and drive infrastructure policy to expand the number of charging points available across Europe."

Two packages are offered – a fixed monthly fee or pay as you go.  Each includes the universal charging key and app download information and is available through the JLR dealer network.

From 2020 all new JLR vehicles will be electrified – fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid.
