Arup, an engineering consultancy best known for its civil and structural engineering work on projects like the Sydney Opera House and the London Millenium Bridge, is making a push into vehicle engineering services.

Arup Automotive already employs 140 people in the UK, Detroit and Tokyo and is aiming to double the size of its automotive business within five years.


The company claims in a news release that it can accurately define the concepts and requirements for a new vehicle and integrate styling with structural analysis, feasibility studies and engineeering risk assessments to produce ‘innovative and realistic design solutions’.


“By running these activities simultaneously, we are able to deliver proposals that can be brought quickly and cost-effectively into production,” said Arup Automotive director Neil Ridley.


In one programme, Arup says it was able to triple the stiffness of a client’s proposal for a cabriolet version of a saloon car whilst also reducing steel usage by 10%.


Arup Automotive’s areas of activity include vehicle styling, structural analysis, NVH, manufacturing analysis and project intergration.
