UK engine manufacturing "held steady" in October with a marginal -0.1% year on year decline in output to 262,981 units.

Exports drove demand with production for overseas markets up 20% to 163,787, offsetting the 21.7% drop to 99,194 in output for the UK – the sixth consecutive month of domestic decline.

Year-to-date volume was 2324921, up 2.6%. YTD export volume was 1,430,496, up 15.2% while YTD output for domestic use was off 12.6% at 894,425.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: "October continued the trend of recent months, with exports shoring up output from British engine plants as domestic demand continued to fall."

UK car manufacturing fell 9.8% year on year in October, with 15,255 fewer units produced compared with the same month a year ago.

In contrast to car output, British commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturing grew 31% year on year in October, with 9,066 vans, trucks, buses and coaches built.
