German car importers sold a total 1.1 million passenger cars in 2002, a 2% year-on-year increase, the German Association of Motor Vehicle Importers VDIK said.

The share of imported cars in total cars sold on the German market increased to 34% in 2002 from 32.4% in 2001, VDIK figures showed.

Importers sold some 320,000 new diesel cars, up 25% year-on-year.

Sales of imported small cars increased by 4% year-on-year and sales of off-road vehicles rose by 19% year-on-year. Sales in the upper-class segment fell by 15% year-on-year in 2002.

Overall German passenger car registrations totalled 3.255 million for 2002, down 2.6% year-on-year.
