New vehicle sales in New Zealand again set records in November.

Registrations of 14,594 new vehicles set a November record and year to date volume of 148,335 (up 9.5% year on year) passed the 2016 full year total of 146,753 units.

The local Motor Industry Association said year to date sales of passenger cars and SUVs were up by 6.2% and commercial vehicles by 16.9% versus 2016. 

Toyota remained overall market leader with 22% market share followed by Ford (11%) and GM Holden (10%).

Toyota also topped passenger car and SUV registrations with 23% market share followed by Holden (11%) and Mazda (9%). The top selling models for the month was a Toyota trifecta – Corolla, RAV4 and Highlander.  

In commercials, Ford was market leader with 22% followed by Toyota (20%) and (8%). The Ford Ranger truck remained best selling model (20%), followed by the Toyota Hilux (14%). Year to date the Ranger was both top commercial and top model overall with 8,824 registrations compared to 7,664 for the Hilux. 

Vehicle segmentation in November returned to more normal patterns with the top four spots taken up by SUVs and light commercial vehicles. The top segments were SUV medium vehicles with 19% share, followed by  the Pick Up/Chassis Cab 4×4 segment (13%) and SUV Large (12%) market share. 

"With one month to go the question is whether the total for the year will break through the 160,000 mark for the first time. The 150,000 total mark for a calendar year is no longer a question," MIA CEO David Crawford said.
