Webasto is expanding its plant for roof systems in Hiroshima, Japan, with EUR5.6m (US$6.4m) ploughed into a new 5,000 square metre building.

“In 2015 we produced over 10m roof systems worldwide,” said Webasto chairman, Holger Engelmann. “More than a million of these were manufactured here in Hiroshima alone.

“The impressive number makes this site the largest plant for roof systems in the global Webasto family. The expansion of this plant strengthens our position in Japan, one of the strategically crucial markets for the automotive industry and for Webasto.”

The new building creates additional production capacity required for future projects. This year, Webasto is planning to hire more than 40 new staff members in Hiroshima.

Webasto has been operating in Japan since 1978 and in 1990, started production of roof systems for nearly all well-known Japanese automakers at its Hiroshima plant.

The location now encompasses an effective usable space totalling 12,500 square metres.

At present, it produces mainly sunroofs and panorama roofs for customers such as Mazda, Nissan and Subaru.
