New Zealand new vehicle sales in June rose 5.1% year on year to 13,699 units. Year to date volume was up 5.3% to 69,057.
June sales were the best since 1982 and the second highest month on record.
There were 9,186 passenger vehicle registrations and 4,513 commercial vehicle registrations. June saw record commercial vehicle registrations, again as a result of a local agricultural sector event known as Fieldays.
Toyota was the overall market leader last month with 19% market share (2,666 units) with Ford second on 11% (1,478 units) and Holden third with 9% (1,274 units).
Toyota remained the passenger car market leader for with 17% share (1,569 units), with Holden second on 9% (843 units) and Mazda third, just one unit behind Holden, with 9% (842 units).
Toyota regained the commercial vehicle market lead from Ford with 24% share (1,097 units) followed by Ford at 20% (882 units) and Holden third at 10% (431 units).

Toyota's Highlander was the top selling passenger model with 5% market share (414 units), followed by the Toyota RAV4 on 4% (396 units) and the Kia Sportage on 3% (316 units).
The Ford Ranger retained its position as the monthly top selling commercial model for June with 19% market share (836 units) and was also again the top selling model overall. The Toyota Hilux was the second best seller with 18% market share (811 units) with the Holden Colorado at 9% (410 units). Year to date the Ford Ranger retains its lead as the top selling commercial model with 19% market share (4,000 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux, with 15% market share (3,263 units).
The top four models for the month of June were all light commercial vehicles, reflecting continued strong demand for 4×2 and 4×4 utes. The SUV segments accounted for 36% of vehicle registrations for the month of June followed by the Pick Up/Chassis segments with 25% share.
