UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT), the importer and distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, has launched the Indonesia-made Sienta compact MPV targeting “modern urban families”.
Deputy chairman Akio Takeyama said the Sienta is Toyota’s first passenger car-based seven-seat model to be introduced in Malaysia. Although compact, highly efficient packaging provides “great functionality with plenty of space for people and luggage”.
President Datuk Ismet Suki added: “The Sienta has been developed for urban families who seek premium value and also want a trendy car with a unique design rather than a plain ‘people-carrier’. The appearance of the model is indeed something quite different from the usual MPV.”
He said around 500 orders had been received since sales began in June.
The Malaysian Sienta is offered in 1.5V and 1.5G variants with six paint colour choices.
It has a new 1.5-litre petrol engine with Dual VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence).

By GlobalDataMaximum power is 107PS/6,000 rpm with 140Nm of peak torque at 4,200 rpm. The car is FWD with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
UMWT said Toyota chose a CVT as it offers high efficiency and smooth operation which is enhanced by the presence of a torque converter which eliminates shift shock. The driver can also select from seven gear positions using the sport sequential ‘shiftmatic’ mode.
The three rows of seats which can accommodate up to seven persons can be arranged in various layouts to suit different requirements. Folding of the seats is easily done and the flat floor space optimises cargo capacity.
Both variants have power sliding doors (left side only for Sienta 1.5G) which can be opened and closed using the door handles, pressing a button on the key fob, or a switch on the dashboard. The Sienta 1.5V is also equipped with smart entry and start.
Designers have provided 14 storage spaces around the cabin.
Safety equipment includes two frontal SRS airbags plus a driver’s kneebag. The Sienta has stability control (VSC) and hill start-assist control (HAC).
The model comes with a five-year warranty in Malysia.
UMWT is targeting sales of around 2,500 units by the end of this year.
