Allison Transmission says it supports new standards issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Administration (NHTSA), regarding fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions for medium and heavy-duty vehicles.

The Phase 2 programme is expected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by around 1.1bn tonnes, save vehicle owners fuel costs of approximately US$170bn and reduce oil consumption by up to 2bn barrels during the lifetime of the vehicles sold under the programme. Phase 2 will also use emerging technologies which are not yet in widespread use.

“With the ability to recognise fuel-saving features in our transmissions, we support use of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Model (GEM) as the programme’s primary certification tool,” said Allison mobile source emissions regulatory activities VP, Deborah Gordon.

“Our latest technologies are already enabling our customers to reduce fuel consumption and emissions without sacrificing performance.”

Allison’s newest products include FuelSense and xFE technologies, as well as the TC10 transmission.

FuelSense is the next generation in fuel-savings technology, for any vocational vehicle, which uses a set of software and electronic controls to improve fuel economy up to 20%.
