The Korea Herald reports that Hyundai Motor is embarking on a “company-wide campaign for “environment-friendly management,” seeking to speed up its entry into the ranks of the global top-five automakers.

“A company-wide environmental committee has been created under direct control of Chairman Chung Mong-koo as part of an effort to become a global top-three enterprise by 2010 in terms of auto-industry environmental protection,” said Hyundai in a press release.

The Korea Herald said that the in-house committee will be in charge of carrying out a set of strategies, jointly devised by a UK-based firm called Environmental Resources Management and German-based Product Engineering and Seoul-based Richard Consulting.

The environment strategies cover the entire corporate value chain, including R&D, procurement, production, marketing, accounting and after-sales services.

“The focuses of the environment committee will include procurements of green products, low emission technologies, high standards of fuel efficiency, pollution-free production process and the recycling of used vehicles,” said the statement.

In order to fully back up the pro-environment campaign, Korea’s largest automaker is to set up an environment technology R&D centre within the Namyang Research Centre, south of Seoul, in the first half, it added.
