The figures follow a depressed period – vehicle sales slumped 37% in December over November due to lower demand for commercial vehicles.

In January, sales of commercial vehicles totalled 24,160 units, up 43% from December. Passenger car sales were 1,982 units in January, up 76% from the previous month.

Analysts took a cautious view though, emphasising the uncertainties facing the Indonesian economy this year.

Market leader PT Astra International that makes and distributes Toyota vehicles in Indonesia posted a 71% monthly rise in vehicle sales to 11,120 units.

Astra had a 43% share of Indonesia’s new vehicle sales last year.
