A year on year increase of 5% last month took New Zealand sales to a record October tally of 12,684 units. Year to date sales rose 5.5% to 112,217 new vehicles.

However, used imported vehicle sales remained strong with a year on year rise of 1.5% to 11,985 units last month.

In new vehicles, Toyota remained the overall market leader for the month of October with 26% market share (3,324 vehicles), boosted by sales of rental vehicles ahead of the summer tourist season, followed by Holden (10%) and Ford (10%). Year to date Toyota, Holden, Ford, Mazda and Hyundai led the market.

New passenger car registrations of 9,636 vehicles in October were up 8% on October 2014 and this was also the strongest result for October on record. Toyota remained passenger car market leader with a 28% share (2,741 vehicles) strongly boosted by sales of rental vehicles, followed by Holden (10%) and Mazda (9%) . Year to date, Toyota, Holden and Mazda led the passenger vehicle market. Assisted by rental sales, Toyota had the top four passenger models for the month of October, with the Corolla the top seller (1,334 vehicles) followed by the Highlander, Yaris and RAV4.

New commercial vehicle registrations of 3,048 vehicles in October were down 65 vehicles compared to October 2014. However, year to date registrations were up 5.5% to 1,687 units. Ford led this segment last month with 21% market share followed by Toyota (19%) and Holden (10%).

The Ford Ranger remained the top selling commercial vehicle model with 561 vehicles, followed by the Hilux and Colorado. Year to date, the Ranger is also top ahead of the Hilux and Colorado.

Year to date, the top selling models overall are the Ranger, Corolla and Hilux.

Sports utility vehicles remained the dominant vehicle segment with 34% market share for the month of October and 34% year to date. The small passenger vehicle segment had 20% share in October and 15% year to date. Pick-up/Chassis Cab took 17% in October and 21% year to date.

"Registrations of new vehicles have averaged a staggering 11,237 a month year to date and, if this pace continues, the industry will smash last year’s record sales of 127,352 new vehicles by about 7,000 units," said Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford.
