The so-called ‘airbumps’ which protected the sides, front and rear of the Citroën C4 Cactus concept have made it to the production model. The new crossover, unveiled today, will be built in Madrid at PSA’s Villaverde plant.

The 5 February 2014 date for the car’s unveiling was chosen for two reasons. It is the fifth anniversary of the launch of the DS range and the 136th birthday of André Citroën. The first deliveries will be in September, with RHD cars for the UK and Ireland following from October.

The new model has changed little from the Cactus concept which was presented at the Frankfurt IAA in September 2013. In particular, it retains the bench-like front seat and ‘airbumps’. The back seat is a sofa-style arrangement which for cost and weight reasons (claimed saving of 11kg), has no split-fold function. Furthermore, not fitting a sunblind for the glass roof and fitting push-out rather than roll-down rear windows brings a 6kg benefit in each case.

Low weight is obviously one of the main USPs of this vehicle, along with striking looks and allegedly spectacular fuel economy. Base variants are claimed to tip the scales at just 965kg, which is 200kg less than the C4. A version powered by a petrol engine will have a CO2 average of fewer than 100g/km, Citroën says, and there will be a diesel which consumes just 3.1 litres/100km (75.8 mpg US or 91.1 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 82g/km.

Citroën executives have hinted in recent months that the successors for the C1, C3 and C5 will share certain styling elements with the C4 Cactus.
