The Honda Accord was the best selling car with individual American retail car buyers in 2013, the automaker’s US unit claimed, citing new vehicle registration data compiled by Polk, which was recently acquired by IHS.

The Accord is built in Marysville, Ohio.

just-auto data showed the archrival Toyota Camry was the most popular car overall in the US last year but that was based on total deliveries including fleet customers rather than retail buyer registrations. Using the latter measure, the Honda outsold the Toyota 360,089 to 342,007, the Polk data showed. Toyota made 408,484 Camry deliveries, a Toyota spokeswoman told Bloomberg News.

“Our focus on retail sales to individual buyers has a direct correlation to the high resale value of Honda products, which is a key factor in the value proposition for our customers,” said American Honda Motor sales chief John Mendel.

Honda’s 2013 retail sales rose 8.4% year on year to 1,332,576 cars and light trucks while individual sales to retail car buyers made up 98.1% of all the brand’s sales in 2013, compared to an average of 81.7% for all other non-luxury vehicles.
