Global security and aerospace Lockheed Martin Corporation has named former General Motors chairman and CEO Daniel Akerson a member of its board effective immediately.
In a statement, Lockheel Martin noted that Akerson, 65, was, pre-GM, a managing director of The Carlyle Group, and previously chairman, chief executive officer or president of several major companies including XO Communications, Nextel Communications, General Instrument Corporation and MCI Communications. He is also currently a director of the United States Naval Academy Foundation.

Akerson previously served on the boards of American Express and AOL Time Warner.
