Electric car company Tesla wants to add manufacturing in China within the next three to four years, CEO Elon Musk told reporters in Beijing without elaborating.

Tesla isn’t exhibiting at the city’s auto show but Musk is in the capital to hand over the keys to the first customers of its Model S which sells in China for the equivalent of around US$115,000.

Musk also said he wanted to invest heavily in a recharging infrastructure for the country where EV sales have been slow despite central and local government subsidies which started in 2009. An estimated 4,100 pure EVs were sold in China in the first quarter of this year.

CAAM, China’s association of automobile manufacturers, has previously admitted that the coordination required to develop a charging infrastructure would be challenging but Musk said he hoped to be able to help launch a nationwide infrastructure as early as next year.
