General Motors is spending US$50m on a new, flexible trim shop and upgrades to the press room at its Lordstown, Ohio, complex for the redesigned Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan due in 2016.

The Cruze, built for North America at Lordstown since autumn 2010, is Chevrolet’s best selling car and the seventh best seller in the US.

“This investment will provide our team with the tools and processes needed to be the best at building the next generation Cruze,” said Lordstown plant manager Bob Parcell.

Some construction work has already begun at the plant. Chevrolet will announce timing for the new Cruze later.

Since 2009, GM has spent approximately US$250m at Lordstown. The plant has built more than 15m vehicles since opening in April 1966.
