Carlos Ghosn, Renault chairman and Nissan president, is the new president of ACEA, the European car makers’ association, a position he previously held in 2009.

Ghosn takes over from Philippe Varin, former chairman of PSA Peugeot Citroën. The change takes effect immediately.

Ghosn steps into the role at what is seen as a critical time for ACEA which many believe is prevaricating over EU demands to introduce more realistic fuel consumption and emissions data for new cars.

The European Commission wants to introduce a new test by September 2017 which would require road tests rather than the current laboratory tests for new cars. But ACEA wants a four-year delay, a move that has upset many campaigners.

ACEA claims that manufacturers want the new tests phased with only a quarter of new cars covered in the initial 2017-18 period.
