Michael Grimaldi, president of General Motors Canada, has warned that the country’s automobile manufacture sector will continue to lose business to the United States unless more money is pumped into making Canada look more attractive to new auto makers.

At the Inaugural Meeting of the Canadian Automotive Partnership Council Mr. Grimaldi said: “whether it be General Motors, DaimlerChrysler and others, we realize there needs to be a sense of urgency in getting governments to act.”


A spokesperson for General Motors Canada said new auto companies are moving to the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama because of US$300 or $400 million incentives. “We need to develop Canadian infrastructure, innovation, fiscal policy and tax breaks to compete with offers like that.”  Recently, Ottawa has been criticised for not offering to help Canadian sites secure contracts at Ford Canada or Daimler Chrysler
