General Motors India will start exporting vehicles from its factory in the country and begin selling a left hand drive version of its Chevrolet Beat hatchback to Chile in the first quarter of 2015.

The company said it would begin production of cars earmarked for export at its Talegaon plant, located in western India, in the second half of this year.

GM has two factories in India, which together can produce 282,000 vehicles a year, although less than one third of the capacity is currently being used.

The company sold nearly 81,000 passenger vehicles in India in the fiscal year ended 31 March, for a market share of 3.2%, according the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
